DESCRIPTION

If you've ever fantasized about being a court intriguer, Murder might just satisfy your dark yet slightly humorous inclinations. Studio Seufz uses a style reminiscent of a cartoon short film to transform the serious and dangerous plot of “assassinating the king” into an interactive experience filled with fun and little surprises. The visuals feature a hand-drawn 2D style with muted colors, yet every detail exudes dramatic flair—from the crown swaying on the king's head to the moment the guards' pupils dilate—all of which are sure to elicit a chuckle.

The game's premise is straightforward: you are a member of the royal court, standing behind the king, with the goal of replacing him as the new ruler. But the path is not smooth, as the king is no fool—he occasionally turns around to see who is making a move. If you're caught red-handed, congratulations, your court career ends instantly. Even more interestingly, even if you succeed in the assassination, you must face the next assassin standing behind you. The court is like an endless cycle, with everyone coveting the throne and everyone fearing the hands behind them.

What makes Murder unique is that it completely lacks traditional dialogue boxes or complex UI. Players must rely solely on visual cues to judge the timing—such as the king’s neck tilting slightly, the guards’ glances drifting over, or the uneasy pause in the air… all of which require you to sense them yourself. In other words, it’s more like a mini-game about rhythm and intuition, rather than something that requires a manual to understand.

The game's atmosphere is also unique. It's neither horror nor serious, but rather a surreal sense of absurdity tinged with black humor. The originally brutal act of assassination is softened here by exaggerated movements and comical expressions, making it feel more like watching a stage play. Studio Seufz excels at this “subtle cruelty,” which engages players without feeling gory or oppressive.

Another major feature is its brevity. There’s no lengthy plot setup, no need to familiarize yourself with dozens of systems, and no tedious tutorial sections—just click and play, with wins or losses decided in seconds. Each round feels like a mini-story, with some succeeding, others failing, and some even getting killed before they can act.

If I had to summarize Murder in one sentence, it would be: “A silent power struggle unfolding behind the throne.” It's lighthearted, straightforward, and filled with the joy of repeated attempts. Playing it doesn't require exceptional strategic skills, but it does demand patience and keen observational skills—because in the court, the one who laughs last is the true winner.

The gameplay of Murder appears to involve only one action—assassination—but in reality, it tests your timing and psychological tactics. At the start of the game, you appear directly behind the king, holding a dagger, with a clear objective: to strike when the king is completely off guard. However, the king is not a stationary puppet; he occasionally turns around suddenly. If he catches sight of your hand, it's “Game Over” on the spot.

Therefore, you must tap the screen during safe intervals to have your character slowly raise the weapon. If the king suddenly turns around, you must immediately release the screen and act innocent, blending in with the guards as if nothing happened. This tension is actually quite thrilling—you never know when the king might give you an unexpected glance.

When you successfully stab the king, he will dramatically fall, and you will naturally ascend to the throne. But this isn't the end, as new challenges immediately begin—now you're the one being watched from behind. You must act like the previous king, turning around unpredictably to catch those attempting to assassinate you. This back-and-forth turns the game into an endless “cat-and-mouse” loop.

Though it may sound monotonous, the actual gameplay reveals an intriguing rhythm. For instance, the king's frequency of turning around is unpredictable—sometimes you're caught off guard after raising your blade for just half a second, while other times you can steady it to the top and land a decisive strike. Additionally, each successful or failed animation has subtle differences, making it easy to get hooked on the tension of repeated trials.

The game has no time limit, so you can take your time observing the king's movement patterns. However, Studio Seufz is clever—they haven't provided completely predictable patterns, meaning that even after playing many rounds, you might still be killed instantly due to overconfidence.

What's even more fun is that this gameplay naturally has a comedic effect. For example, you might just sit on the throne, not even getting to feel the glory for three seconds, before being easily killed by the assassin behind you. Sometimes your “turning around” animation is too slow, and you end up watching the knife fall right in front of your eyes. These “embarrassing exits” are easy to laugh at.

If you’re looking for a story-driven, large-scale adventure, Murder might be too short. But if you want a quick, tension-filled, twist-filled game that you can jump into anytime, it’s perfect. The gameplay is so simple it doesn’t even need text instructions, yet it’s engaging enough to play on the subway, in a café, or on your way home from work—or even compete with friends to see who can stay king the longest.

Its essence lies in timing: don't get caught; when it's your turn to be king, react quickly and look fierce. It sounds like an ancient court survival rule, but in Murder, it's just a addictive little game—failing over and over, wanting to play again and again, until you finally manage to sit firmly on that chair.
